Olive Oil from Tar & Vabriga
Olive oil from Tar and Vabriga has been a pillar in the continuity of the local livelihoods of this region since antiquity to the present day.
Olive oil from Tar and Vabriga has been a pillar in the continuity of the local livelihoods of this region since antiquity to the present day: from the 1st to the 6th centuries of the new era Laron Bay was the main centre for the production of amphorae which transported olive oil for the entire Adriatic, the oil from this area found its way onto the rich tables of Europe’s rulers, and from the 1970s the FAO – the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, has scientifically established that the geomorphic and climatic characteristics of this region are ideal for producing high quality extra virgin oil and it also confirmed significant curiosity that right here is the northernmost point in Europe where oil of such quality, delicacy and balance can be produced.
So, it was no surprise that in the development strategy of Tar-Vabriga as a micro-destination was confirmed, and so subsequently the whole community accepted that the local olive oil was the key link to the past, the present and the future of the local inhabitants’ lives. It is at the same time a memento of the glorious past, an inspiration, a way forward today and a generator of sustainable development for the future, both in the production of superior quality extra virgin olive oil, as well as developing a self-confident, attractive and vibrant tourist micro-destination.
The Eco-Museum of Olive Oil in Tar and Vabriga which will incorporate a modern interpretation centre, a park and olive trails, it is an umbrella structure upon which the Community of Tar Vabriga, Tourist Association Tar Vabriga and Association of Oil producers of Istrian County ‘Olea’ with its headquarters in Tar will base the development of this great olive production centre of Istria and Croatia.
In fact Tar’s olive growers and producers of high quality extra virgin olive oil, who are presented in this catalogue, are key people in this development process and at the same time main characters in the stories of this destination. With their dedication to work, by inheriting the tradition and knowledge of their ancestors and by being open to new technology and with a lifetime of learning, from year to year by cultivating century-old olive trees, as well as planting new trees, and producing top quality oils they are being increasingly recognised and prized outside Istria and beyond the borders of Croatia. Together all parts of their work are a great experience for all visitors to Tar and Vabriga: their olive groves are dotted with dry stone walls forming a unique cultural landscape to be explored by all travellers, and their open cellars and tasting rooms are becoming an unforgettable cultural gastronomic experience where, along with the local seafood and wines, they can try the olive oils se well! One more thing: the experience here is available to everyone, and not just in the busy summer months, but all year round!
